Croydon Visual Impairment Service – support offered to pupils with a visual impairment in LEA mainstream primary and secondary schools

Teacher of the Visually Impaired (ToVI) visits can include specialist teaching and/or observation and advice to teaching staff on visual access strategies.  In addition to the visit level indicated, which is the minimum, ToVIs make additional visits to carry out assessments of functional vision, conduct short courses of instruction e.g. use of low vision aids i.e. CCTV, hand held magnifiers, touch-typing & navigation of the computer keyboard using key commands, sighted guide training, use of special equipment e.g. large key calculators, Dictaphones, study skills and effective use of special examination concessions. ToVIs also provide training for teaching and support staff in the schools.

Specialist Support Assistant (SSA) hours include some in-class support, but more usually it is time devoted to producing modified materials tailored specifically for individual pupils needs.

The Visual Impairment Service has a bank of specialist equipment, large print textbooks and modified materials which are provided to pupils and schools as and when they are needed.

Pupils with a Statement of Special Educational Need generally have additional LSA hours for in-class support (managed by schools) and additional equipment and resources provided from school budgets. The table below only indicates what is provided by the Visual Impairment Service.
